Atishi Takes Charge as Delhi CM: AAP’s ‘Fiery’ Chapter Begins, Delhi Gets Its Youngest Chief Minister

Atishi Sworn in as Delhi’s Chief Minister: Atishi Marlena, a leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), has been sworn in as the third female Chief Minister of Delhi, following Congress leader Sheila Dixit and BJP’s Sushma Swaraj.

Atishi Sworn in as Delhi’s New Chief Minister

Atishi Marlena, a leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), was sworn in as the new Chief Minister of Delhi on September 21, 2024. The oath-taking ceremony took place at the Raj Niwas, with her cabinet members also taking the oath alongside her. Atishi becomes the third woman to hold the position of Chief Minister of Delhi, following Sheila Dixit and Sushma Swaraj.
The ceremony was attended by former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and other prominent AAP leaders. Atishi also became the youngest Chief Minister of Delhi. The Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, VK Saxena, had proposed September 21st as the date for the swearing-in ceremony. Atishi was joined by five other ministers who also took the oath.

Atishi’s Cabinet Takes Oath

Atishi’s cabinet also took the oath alongside her. The most prominent figure in her cabinet is Saurabh Bhardwaj. Following the imprisonment of former Delhi Health Minister Satyendra Jain and former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, the party entrusted Saurabh Bhardwaj with a significant responsibility, appointing him as the new Health Minister of Delhi. Before the oath-taking ceremony, the party’s national convener, Arvind Kejriwal, nominated Atishi and other AAP leaders for ministerial positions.

Atishi’s Political Journey

Atishi was born on June 8, 1981, to Vijay Kumar Singh, a professor at Delhi University, and Tripta Wahi. She received her early education at Springdales School and graduated with a degree in History from St. Stephen’s College. She then went on to pursue a Master’s degree from Oxford University on a Chevening Scholarship. A few years later, she earned another Master’s degree in Educational Research as a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford. Following her studies, she became a teacher at Rishi Valley School in Andhra Pradesh. She was actively involved in organic farming and education, leading her to work with an NGO in Bhopal. It was during her time with this NGO that she came into contact with AAP and lawyer Prashant Bhushan. She actively participated in the Anna Movement and has since become a prominent face of the Aam Aadmi Party. Atishi joined the AAP in 2013.
Atishi’s political journey is marked by her dedication to education and social reform. Her appointment as Chief Minister of Delhi signifies a new chapter in the political landscape of the capital. With the upcoming Assembly elections in Delhi next year, Atishi’s leadership will be crucial in shaping the future of the city.
